Background of the Study
Online education has emerged as a transformative force in modern educational landscapes, redefining traditional learning paradigms while introducing innovative approaches to knowledge delivery. In Jalingo North LGA, Taraba State, the rapid shift from conventional classroom settings to digital platforms has underscored the importance of support systems beyond the school environment. Notably, parental involvement has become a critical component in ensuring that students not only access online materials but also develop the requisite skills for independent learning (Adebola, 2023). Parents who actively engage in their children’s education help bridge gaps between academic content and real-life applications by monitoring assignments, facilitating access to resources, and offering motivational support (Ibrahim, 2023). The integration of technology in education, while offering vast opportunities, also presents challenges that demand a collaborative effort between educators and parents to enhance learning outcomes (Okoro, 2024).
In many communities across Taraba State, socioeconomic constraints and limited digital literacy among parents pose significant challenges. These challenges often result in uneven support for students, leading to disparities in academic performance. Research indicates that effective parental participation can mitigate these challenges by fostering a learning environment that is both supportive and adaptive to individual student needs (Adamu, 2025). Additionally, evolving cultural expectations about the roles of parents in education have necessitated a redefinition of engagement strategies. With online education becoming a permanent fixture in the educational system, the dynamic interplay between parental involvement, technological proficiency, and academic achievement is increasingly relevant. The rapid expansion of digital learning environments calls for an in-depth analysis of how these factors converge in Jalingo North LGA, where traditional practices meet modern educational demands.
Furthermore, the integration of parental support in online education is seen as instrumental in overcoming barriers related to motivation and self-regulation among students. As the digital landscape evolves, so does the need for parents to stay updated on technological trends and educational tools, ensuring that their involvement remains effective over time (Olawale, 2024). This study, therefore, seeks to examine the multifaceted role of parental engagement in online education, focusing on how it impacts learning outcomes. By exploring the interplay of socioeconomic factors, digital literacy, and cultural influences, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how parental involvement can be optimized to improve academic performance. The findings are expected to offer practical insights for educators and policymakers striving to enhance online education in similar settings (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the proliferation of online education in Jalingo North LGA, there remains a significant gap in understanding the influence of parental involvement on students’ academic outcomes. Many studies have concentrated on technological access and digital pedagogy, yet the role of parents in navigating these platforms has not been thoroughly examined (Adebola, 2023). Many parents in the region encounter challenges such as low digital literacy, financial constraints, and competing personal responsibilities. These issues often lead to inconsistent engagement, thereby affecting students’ ability to benefit fully from online education (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the transition to virtual learning has not been accompanied by adequate training or support for parents, leaving them ill-equipped to assist their children effectively.
This lack of structured parental involvement has led to observable discrepancies in student performance, where learners with active parental support tend to outperform those without such engagement. The fragmentation in communication between educators and parents further exacerbates the problem, as the online medium often impedes timely and effective interaction (Okoro, 2024). Consequently, many students struggle with self-regulation and motivation, resulting in diminished academic progress. Additionally, the absence of targeted interventions aimed at enhancing parental competencies in digital environments has intensified these challenges. Socioeconomic disparities further compound the issue, as parents from lower-income backgrounds may have limited access to technological resources, thereby reducing their ability to support online learning adequately (Adamu, 2025).
This study seeks to address these concerns by investigating the extent to which parental involvement influences online learning outcomes and by identifying the underlying factors that hinder effective engagement. The research will explore how challenges such as technological limitations, inadequate communication channels, and socio-cultural barriers affect parental support. Ultimately, the study aims to provide actionable recommendations to bridge these gaps and enhance the overall quality of online education in the region.
